Red Eye – Rewind

Wes Craven is a horror maestro, despite my reservations about some of his earlier movies. With the mega successful Freddy Krueger series and the Scream franchise under his belt, Craven goes for the more mature audience with this tense thriller, starring Cillian Murphy and Rachel McAdams.

Red Eye is the nick name of a flight that takes place late at night, usually a short flight too and this is where a lot of the movie is set. We follow Rachel McAdams character, Lisa Reisert, as she sets off from her grandmothers funeral back to her hometown and work. She is a hardworking hotel manager, and leaves the running of the hotel reluctantly down to her staff while she attented the funeral. Redeye really starts in earnest when Reisert meets a man in the flight queue, Jackson Rippner played by Cillian Murphy. Little does she know that things are about to become a little more complicated for her.

I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie, well acted, tense and scary but not silly or comedic. It had a nice blend of characters and ideas, that keep you watching it happily all the way through. McAdams is great in the lead role and Jayma Mays is great as her dipsy cover worker at the hotel. I had never heard of Red Eye at all till someone lent me the DVD, maybe you’ve never heard of it either. So forget it’s a Wes Craven movie if you weren’t a fan of the Freddy movies, if you spot the DVD at the rental shop and fancy a nice little thriller movie give it a try.
