Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides

Pirates of the Caribbean is set to start shooting on the fourth movie in the series this June and finally it seems the cast rumours are starting to settle down with Johnny Depp now confirmed to return in his most successful box office role of Captain Jack Sparrow. Both Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley have also stated that they won’t be returning for the fourth movie but Geoffrey Rush will be reprising his role as Captain Barbossa.

The new cast members for On Stranger Tides that have been confirmed so far are Penélope Cruz and Ian McShane the latter will be playing the famous pirate Blackbeard and with his extensive acting history and steller performance in Deadwood I’m sure he will bring some gravitas to the role. Penélope Cruz is an interesting choice for the movie but i think she will fit right into the Pirates universe and it will be interesting to see if she is going to play the lead love interest or a more meatier character.

The story this time is going to based on Tim Powers novel of the same name, and involves a search for the fountain of youth on the high seas. Gore Verbinski the director of the previous three movies has obviously had his fill of pirates and wont be returning for this movie, for which you can hardly blame him. Instead Rob Marshall is handling directing duties with his previous films including Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha and Nine.

Personally ill be glad to see another Pirates movie, even though the last two were somewhat overblown with CGI effects and gimmicks, they were still enjoyable high seas romps, but it remains to be seen if Pirates will still be in fashion when On Stranger Tides gets released in early 2011.
