Outlander – Movie Review
Outlander is science fiction film that manages to also be a fantasy movie sandwiched between. We follow the story of Kainen played by James Cavievzel who while travelling in his spaceship on a return missing, crashes due to a monster known as an Moorwen sneaking onto this ship. Not only do Kainen and the beast known as a Moorwen crash but they happen to crash in a historic setting in the time of the Vikings in Norway. From here the Moorwen continues to cause havoc among the new environment while Kainen has his own troubles as he’s gets to know some of the Viking locals played by Sophia Myles, Jack Huston, Ron Perlman and John Hurt.
Outlander is right up my street as far as movies goes, it has some great special effects, and some stylishly shot scenes with a good sense of the time it’s trying to depict. Overall you could say that writer and director Howard McCain has done a solid job here. All this was helped I’m sure by some Iain McCraig conceptual design who is a favorite artist of mine. Couple this with some decent acting from the supporting cast and a leading character and story that feeds you the back story as you go along and you have a combination for a decent genre movie that is going to appeal to everyone who likes this kind of film. While the story is possibly a little drawn out and the slow paced start does take a while to warm up.
Science fiction and fantasy fans should definitely check out Outlander, and while it does possess some crossover appeal to the mainstream, it’s not going to be for everyone. While the story is possibly a little drawn out and the slow paced start does take a while to warm up, you can help but keep watching just to make sure the story turns out as you expect.
